5th grade- science and art: Northern lights

3/5/2013

The 5th grade classes created these lovely pieces of art work based off of the Northern Lights!
We discussed how the Northern Lights are created and why there are different colors in the sky. We watched a video of the Northern Lights dancing across the night sky. They thought it was so cool! Using chalk pastels, students created their own Northern Light background. We then added a black silhouetted landscape over top. Some students decided to add stars to their picture while others did not.

I did this with my 8th grade last year and they loved it! But what a mess we had to clean up afterward! Yikes! Still, it was worth it to see their faces!

Judy,
We just used black tempera paint! I asked the students to create the land first (if they wanted it to be hilly, flat, mountains, etc) and then they added their trees.
My 6th grade students just finished this project, so I should have some new pictures of this up soon!

Someone Sometimes with visits your blog regularly and recommended it in my experience to read as well.

How did you create the silhouette in the foreground? Cut paper? Does it glue to paper with chalk pastel on it, if so?
